When it comes to getting their children to obey, some parents use the "because I sail so" approach. They demand compliance only based on their authority as parents. Their children may obey outwardly out of fear, or perhaps not obey at all. There was a mom who put her toddler in his highchair so she could feed him lunch. Repeatedly, she had to tell him to sit down. Each time he sat, he would stand back up a moment later. Finally giving in, the little boy said, "I may be sitting down on the outside, but I'm standing up on the inside." What we really need to focus on is the attitude of the child's heart, because that is what makes the difference between genuine obedience and rebellion. When a child has full assurance of his parents' love for him and he believes mom and dad truly want the very best for him, there will be far less rebellion and far more cooperation.
What about your obedience to God? Are you sitting down on the outside and standing up on the inside? Just like that little child, it is the attitude of our hear that makes all the difference. Jesus said, " If you love me, you will keep my commandments." John 14:15 ESV Our motivation to obey the Lord is rooted in our love for Him in response to the unconditional love he has poured out on us. We submit to the authority of God's word because we know the love and wisdom that is behind it. We obey God because we love Him deeply and we wand to please and honor Him.
All sin is based on the lie that God is holding back something good from you and you must take matters into your own hands. Just ask Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). However, as the depth of your relationship with God grows, your trust in Him will also grow, disarming Satan's lie. I love the wisdom of the old song that says, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace." Turn your heart toward Jesus. Love Him with all of your heart, soul, strength and mind. As your heart aligns with His, your thoughts and actions will follow. You will bring joy to the heart of your Father and bring glory to His name.
